This paper highlights recent understanding of bone mechanobiology during normal physiology focusing on (a) identifying cell organelles responsible for mechanosensation and (b) characterising the mechanical stimuli that bone cells experience in vivo and in vitro. The effect of osteoporosis on bone cell mechanosensitivity, mechanotransduction, and mechanical environment are explored.
