The Galway Consensus Conference, which was held in Irish Republic, in June 2008, is a first step in reaching international accord on the competencies and quality assurance mechanisms necessary for the professional preparation of health promotion and health education specialists to improve workforce capacity and advance the global health agenda through health promotion. This special section includes 6 papers. The first 4 papers discuss the purpose, objectives and process of the Conference, the terminology and key conceptual and professional issues in the credentialing of health education and health promotion specialists, the current developments in accreditation and certification for health promotion and health education, and capacity-building in health promotion in Developing Countries based on the US experience. The next 2 papers present the Galway Consensus Conference Statement and the comments on the Statement from opinion leaders.
