16s ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is routinely used to identify bacteria in direct detection Culture confirmation assays. In some instances rRNA cannot be used as a target to distinguish between phylogenetically closely related bacteria. Here we evaluate an alternative target, transfer messenger RNA (tmRNA), for the culture confirmation of Listeria monocytogenes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
