Art as Transformative Memory By reflecting on a series of curatorial practices that have taken place in Florence in the last couple of years, this paper provides a comparison between memory and translation, and in doing so draws attention to the potentially innovative experience brought about by the combination of disparate art in public spaces. Memory translates the past into the present and produces a new text whose resemblance with the original is complex. The outcome of memory, as in the case of translation, depends on the strategies that the translator adopts to move from one text to another so that the past can be conserved according to established values or transformed by questioning those very established norms.
