The microstructure, mechanical response, fretting and fatigue behaviour of a ferritic-pearlitic steel used to manufacture flexible marine risers are characterised. A physically based crystal plasticity finite element framework is developed and calibrated against experimental data. Fatigue life predictions are shown to be in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. A methodology for studying the sensitivity of microstructure in fretting of this material is also presented.
