Through a detailed textual analysis of John Stahlís Imitation of Life, this article explores the manner in which 1930s domestic melodramas visualise the home as a space apart from the public sphere of economic exchange. Drawing on phenomenological understandings of cinematic space, the article argues that careful attention to framing and camera movement within Stahlís film reveal the set of exclusions and displacements through which its image of home becomes possible, and enables us to more fully understand the spatial assumptions through which melodrama produces its moral universe.
