This chapter discusses how Beauchamp and Childress describe what is involved in the use of principles in in the most recent, 6th edition of their Principles of Biomedical Ethics (2009). It discusses how the authors conceptualise the principles, and the concerns they discuss in relation to application of principles, including what they describe as specification and balancing. In this context, the chapter addresses the similarities between principlism and casuistry, the role of character and their understanding of justification including their concept of "common morality".
