This paper explores the representation of private and public spaces in recent Irish cinema, arguing that the distinction between these categories has dissolved as both private and public spheres have increasingly become spaces of sexual encounter. It examines the forms of identity which traditional spatial divides supported and the effect upon national and gender identities of these spatial shifts. Central to the spatial shifts within Irish cinematic culture is the shift from the rural to the urban as the paradigmatic space of Irish culture and society, and this paper also addresses the implications of this for identity formation.
