This papers argues that patient autonomy in the psychotherapeutic relationship is frequently undermined by the hidden effect of psychotherapeutic techniques that disempower the patient. Working against these effects is particularly difficult due to the implicit nature and often unacknowledged presence of such disempowering effects.
