With the increasing importance of collaborative research in academia and in industry, it is imperative that information systems and services provide an environment for maximum efficiency in the creation, management, sharing and use of information. Through an investigation of the collaborative practices and communications patterns of researchers working in University College Dublin, it was found that traditional methods namely face-to-face communication and email are the preferred methods of communication and information sharing. It was also found that researchers are employing a wide variety of local and often commoditised information and communication tools to support collaboration and group work.
