This paper reports 25 dates on pin fragments from two monuments within the Carrowmore passage tomb complex, Co. Sligo, Ireland. This is the first occasion that a core artefact from the Irish passage tomb assemblage has been systematically dated. Methodological issues with previous dating programmes at Carrowmore, including the general problem of using charcoal to date megalithic monuments, are considered. The implications of the results are discussed, with a focus on their impact on former interpretations of the chronology of Carrowmore and the beginnings of the passage tomb tradition in north-west Ireland.
